According to the National Statistical Committee of Armenia, 364,489 tourists arrived in the country since January to March 2019 An increase of 5.2% was recorded in comparison with the period January - March 2018 (346,458 tourists). The positive dynamics of inbound tourism has been maintained for several years, which creates the conditions for the sustainable development of tourism infrastructure in Armenia. The predominant motive for visiting Armenia is to get acquainted with the historical and cultural heritage of the country, including the monuments included in the UNESCO Heritage List - the Cathedral of Holy Ejmiatsin and the temples of Saints Hripsime and Gayane, the rock-hewn Geghard Monastery and the ancient temple of Garni, Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries.
In addition, there has been a recent diversification of tourist demand in Armenia: the number of gastronomic tourists and lovers of Armenian wine is growing, sports and hiking are actively developing. New destinations are offered for eco-tourism.
The park next to the Vernissage market turned into a gourmet open-air restaurant on the15th of June. Here “UTEST FEST”, the annual festival of Armenian holiday dishes was held.
The aim of the festival is to show that the gastronomic tradition in Armenia has become anintegral part of the country's rich cultural heritage, to revive and popularize ritual and festive dishes - carriers of the Armenian national identity. The festival should give an impetus to the development of gastronomic tourism in Armenia. It is no secret that many tourists come to the country specifically in order to taste the dishes of its diverse cuisine. However, very often not only they, but even many Armenians know some of the most famous dishes, while each region of historical Armenia had dozens of its unique dishes.
“UTEST FEST” festival is organized by the Association for the Development and Preservation of Armenian Culinary Traditions, which is headed by the recognized luminary of Armenian cuisine - Sedrak Mamulyan. The preparation of festive and ceremonial dishes has always been confined to the most important religious celebrations, family holidays. Their use has become a kind of philosophy, which has been interwoven with the life guidelines of Armenians since ancient times. During the festival, guests could taste the amazing Armenian sweets of gata, halva and pakhlava.
"Armenia Travel" took part in the largest French-language exhibition TOP RESA 2018 in Paris. Worth to mention, that French and French-speaking tourists’ interest in Armenia is growing every year. This is especially true in connection with the holding of the Francophonie Summit in Yerevan this October, which brought delegations from a lot of French-speaking countries and became an important event in the cultural and economic life of the country. The participation of Armenia in the organization of the Francophonie popularizes the country as a tourist destination.
