Ararat valley Vineyards – Khor Virap monsatery – Echmiadzin (B/-/D)
The moring will start with the visit to Ararat Valley. Located at the foot of biblical Mt Ararat this land plays major role in the agriculture of Armenia. The cultivation of various sorts of grapes here goes back to the times of Noah. Here we will also visit Khor Virap monastery which embodies the adoption of Christianity in Armenia in 301 AD and allows wonderful views of Mt Ararat.
In the afternoon we will visit Echmiadzin, which is the religious center of all Armenians. Echmiadzin Cathedral was the first church to be built in Armenia. Legend tells that it was here that Jesus Christ descended from Heaven to show where he wanted a church to be built. *On Sundays a wonderful church choir performs Divine Lithurgyhere. After this we will visit the ruins of the marvelous medieval cathedral Zvartnots. The area is a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.
*If it is a week-end you will also have a chance to explore the outdoor handicraft market Vernisage where you can find the most attractive hand-made souvenirs, carpets, handicrafts made from local volcanic glass obsidian, Armenian cross-stones (khachkars) made of tuff stone, some interesting ceramic items and other local souvenirs.
